Travis Scott’s legal battle regarding the tragic Astroworld festival has taken an unexpected turn. An emergency motion filed by plaintiffs in the case demands access to Scott’s phone records. However, Scott’s lawyers cite an unusual reason for the delay: his phone allegedly fell into the ocean in January 2022 and cannot be retrieved.
The Emergence of the Motion
The joint emergency motion was filed by law firms Arnold and Itkin, Roberts Markland, and Lyons and Simmons. It sought the production of phone records from Travis Scott, his entity XX Global Inc., and its employees. The aim was to authenticate the phone records in the ongoing case.
Allegations of Non-Compliance
The motion was prompted by the deposition of Cactus Jack’s general manager, David Stromberg. Stromberg testified that he had never turned over his phone to Travis Scott’s lawyers for imaging. This revelation raised concerns about the thoroughness of the phone record review.

Travis Scott’s deposition process has been lengthy and arduous. He recently endured an eight-hour grilling regarding the Astroworld tragedy, which resulted in hundreds of lawsuits. Legal History
Travis Scott was cleared of criminal charges related to the festival deaths earlier this year, as a grand jury exonerated him in June. During an interview shortly after the 2021 festival, Scott claimed he was unaware of the tragedy’s severity while on stage.
The Astroworld Tragedy
Ten individuals aged nine to 27 lost their lives in the crowd surge during the festival, with hundreds more sustaining injuries. Over 1,500 civil lawsuits have been filed, primarily against Scott and Live Nation, the festival’s host.
Recent Settlement
In August, Scott and Live Nation quietly settled a lawsuit with the family of one of the Astroworld victims. John Hilgert’s family, whose son was 14 years old, decided to settle out of court for an undisclosed sum.
Legal Proceedings Continue
The first of the civil trials is scheduled to begin on May 6, 2024, as the legal battle surrounding the Astroworld tragedy persists.
