Pearl Jam rocks the United Center in Chicago for Night 2

An Enthusiastic Start

The second night of Pearl Jam’s two-night concert series at the United Center in Chicago kicked off with a blast of energy. The band ignited the evening with “Elderly Woman Behind the Counter in a Small Town,” and the crowd’s exuberance immediately filled the arena. When Eddie Vedder belted out the line “I just want to say HELLO,” the audience’s roar set the tone for a memorable night.

Heartfelt Moments

Continuing their set, Pearl Jam delved into the fan favorite “Daughter” from the Vs. album. The third song, however, brought out deep emotions in the crowd as Vedder shared a touching story about friends who recently lost their young son. He dedicated the poignant song “Come Back” to the grieving family, and as the crowd sang along, tears welled up in many eyes.

Personal Stories and Nostalgia

After “Come Back,” Vedder shared personal images with the audience, including one of his grandmother and basketball legend Dennis Rodman. He recounted the story of Rodman giving his grandmother his jersey after a Chicago Bulls playoff game, tying it to the ESPN series “The Last Dance,” which featured a Pearl Jam song at its end. This led seamlessly into the powerful “Present Tense,” a song about living life to the fullest.

A Dynamic Setlist

As the night progressed, Pearl Jam intensified the setlist with a seamless transition into “Why Go” and “Who Ever Said” before slowing things down with “Seven O’Clock,” a masterpiece from their album Gigaton. The set featured several deep cuts like “Tremor Christ,” “Green Disease,” “Marker in the Sand,” “Deep,” and “Garden.”

Crowd Favorites

Throughout the performance, Pearl Jam didn’t disappoint their fans, delivering beloved tracks such as “Even Flow,” “Black,” “Lukin,” and “Porch,” leaving the audience craving more.

A Special Tribute

Eddie Vedder didn’t keep the crowd waiting long for an encore. He returned to the stage after a brief break, joined by his dear friend, Chris Chelios, the former Blackhawks defenseman. Together, they paid tribute to the late Blackhawks owner, Rocky Wirtz, sharing heartfelt stories and leading the crowd in chants of “Rocky, Rocky, Rocky.” Vedder then announced the retirement of Chelios’ number 7 jersey, with Pearl Jam members donning red Chelios Blackhawks jerseys. This touching moment seamlessly transitioned into Chelios’ favorite song, “Given to Fly.”

A Powerful Encore

The encore was as potent as the main set, treating the audience behind the stage to “Smile.” Pearl Jam expressed their excitement for The Rolling Stones’ forthcoming album before launching into The Stones’ hit “Street Fighting Man.” The band continued the celebration with “Alive,” a song that has evolved into a celebration of life itself.

Grand Finale

The night came to an electrifying close with an up-tempo cover of The Who’s “Baba O’Reiley” and the Ten b-side, “Yellow Ledbetter.” Throughout the show, Mike McCready showcased his extraordinary guitar skills, Jeff Ament held the groove, and Stone Gossard received praise from Eddie Vedder for his songwriting contributions. Matt Cameron, behind the drum kit, provided a masterful performance that captivated Vedder himself at times.

Pearl Jam’s second night in Chicago was a powerful, emotional, and unforgettable experience that showcased the band’s enduring talent and their ability to connect with their devoted fans.
